Meniere's disease is a chronic condition affecting the inner ear, characterized by episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a feeling of fullness in the ear. These symptoms can significantly impair the quality of life of affected individuals, and appropriate medication adherence is crucial for managing the disease (Musa et al., 2023). Medications prescribed for Meniere’s disease typically aim to reduce the severity and frequency of vertigo attacks and manage symptoms such as nausea and hearing loss. However, patients often face challenges in adhering to prescribed treatment regimens, which can result in poor disease management and exacerbation of symptoms (Aliyu et al., 2024).
In Kaduna State, patients with Meniere’s disease may face unique challenges that hinder their ability to follow prescribed medication regimens. These barriers could range from limited access to healthcare services, financial constraints, lack of patient education, to the side effects of medications (Ibrahim et al., 2024). Nurses play a vital role in educating patients about their conditions and the importance of adherence to treatment, yet the barriers they face in managing Meniere’s disease are not well-documented in this region. This study aims to investigate these barriers and explore how nurses can improve medication adherence among patients with Meniere's disease in Kaduna State.
Non-adherence to prescribed medication regimens among patients with Meniere’s disease in Kaduna State hospitals is a significant problem that may contribute to poor symptom management and reduced quality of life. Although medication adherence is critical for controlling the disease, there is limited understanding of the specific barriers that prevent patients from following treatment regimens. This research seeks to identify these barriers and explore potential solutions to improve adherence, with a particular focus on the role of nurses in facilitating medication compliance.
This study will focus on patients diagnosed with Meniere’s disease in selected hospitals in Kaduna State. The research will also examine nurses’ role in improving medication adherence. Limitations may include the small sample size due to the rarity of Meniere’s disease, as well as potential biases in self-reported medication adherence.
